Karen Lee: Final project

statement:

My open air gallery was made for the art work of Brian Jungen: the piece is called Prototype for New Understanding. It is created only by Nike Jordan shoes and Brian Jungen turned this shoes into Indian masks. So to keep the characteristics of the Indians, I try to make the gallery that is suitable and represent-able for Indians. For example, in order to see the art work, people need to go deep into the art gallery. People can see the space from outside or from the overhead walkway however they can not see what’s inside. One reason of this is to evoke people’s curiosity and second reason is in these century Indians are more hiding from us and they are living in the place far from us. This fact also made the gallery to be isolated and placed beside the trees. Moreover, I wanted to give people some relaxation. In the downtown, I found out that people are busy and they are getting stress from working. So I try to make a place where people can relax and get rid of any stress while they are in the gallery. So this is one of the other reasons that I isolated the gallery from the path. Also in the gallery there are seats that they can rest. This gallery would be placed in front of Nathan Philips square.

Nike air Jordans

" I was interested in the ubiquitousness of native motifs, especially in Vancouver, and how they have been corrupted and applied and assimilated commercially, e.g in the tourist industry. It was interesting to see how by simply manipulating the Air Jordan shoes you could evoke specific manipulating the Air Jordan shoes you could evoke specific cultural traditions whilst simultaneously amplifying the process of cultural corruption and assimilation. The Bay Queen St (historical Simpson's store)

1) The Queen Street Bay store includes the Department 'St. Regis Room' on the third floor which carries some of the most prestigious and expensive women's designer label clothing in Canada. Some of the designer brands which the ‘St. Regis Room’ includes are Givenchy, Valentino Roma, Armani Collezioni, Louis Feraud, Karl Lagerfeld, Lida Baday and Bellville Sassoon.

2) Originally since the 19th century, the Eaton’s department store was the biggest rivalry for the Queen Street Bay store. The two stores faced each other across Queen Street but now the Toronto Eaton Centre occupies where the Eaton’s department used to be.

3) The Queen Street Bay store is Canada’s largest department store with approximately 1,000,000 square feet of space. The store occupies the entire city block and also was the setting for a TV series called “Today’s Special”.

4) At the south east entrance of the store, there is a plaque showing all fifty two employees of the Queen Street Bay store (at the time called the Simpson’s store) who fought in the World War II.

Community : in the downsview, there were lots of places where people can enjoy the leisure time. This photo shows indoor car racing place.

Transit: In the Downsview station, two transits are running such as TTC (bus and subway) and Viva (bus).

Government/ traffic" on the street I easily saw people who were wearing the military uniform.

Business type/groups/density.. ETC: Most people who are selling the products are South American. Also i found out that lots of people in the market were black people.

ethnicitie: This place contains cultural aspect of Africa.
